Textbook Buyback & Rental Return FAQs
Rental textbooks can be returned to the UCM Store any time during the semester the textbooks were obtained. The final opportunity to return rental textbooks occurs during finals week each Fall and Spring semester at the UCM Store at the Crossing and at the UCM Store inside MIC at Lee’s Summit during regular business hours.
Summer Rental Returns are conducted at the UCM Store at the Crossing and during regular business hours at the UCM Store inside MIC at Lee’s Summit. For specific dates, please view our Store Calendar
Rental books not received by 6:00 p.m. on the last day of finals, will result in a charge for the cost of a new replacement textbook, billed to your student account.
Students should present a UCM student ID when returning rental textbooks.
Rental textbooks will be inspected by UCM Store staff to confirm that only normal wear and tear has occurred. Torn covers, missing pages, excessive highlighting or writing, water damage, etc. may result in additional fees, as assessed by UCM Store staff. If excessive damage has occurred, the textbook may not be accepted and the student will be charged the cost of a new replacement textbook.

Yes, provided the UCM Store has a need for the textbook. A UCM Store representative will check your student account to confirm the non-returned rental book fee has been paid. Please alert the buyer/cashier that you wish to sell a rental textbook from a previous semester.
Yes, but please make sure you didn't rent it from another source.
The value of a textbook is based on demand and the overall condition of the book. Demand changes as we buy textbooks. The condition must be visually evaluated, so the best way of finding the value of a book is to bring it to Buyback. Come early for the best rates. Please use the Buyback page on our website to enter the ISBN and see an estimated buyback value.
The UCM Store cannot guarantee to buy back all textbooks. Possible reasons your textbook may not qualify include:
- The textbook is damaged or missing pages
- The following course materials are ineligible for Buyback:
- Loose-leaf
- Activated access codes
- Course packets
- Lab manuals
- eBooks
- Workbooks
- The faculty member using the textbook has not adopted it for use in the upcoming semester
- The UCM Store and our wholesaler have met the quota needed for that particular textbook
The UCM Store has a quota for each textbook based on enrollment needs. Once we reach that quota we may be unable to offer the same amount. If our wholesale partner is still purchasing the book, they may offer a lower price. In some cases it is possible that we will not be able to purchase the book at all. For this reason, it is important that you bring your textbooks in as early as possible.
Yes, your previous semester textbooks may still have buyback value if demand exists. Check our website Buyback page for a current estimated value or bring these books to buyback at the UCM Store at the Crossing or the UCM Store at MIC in Lee's Summit.
We accept retail textbooks and rental returns shipped to the UCM Store with a postmark not later than the last day of finals of each semester. A credit is posted to the student’s account for books purchased during Buyback.
